Day 228: 11/14/2018

PhD Referencing has become a snap!

One of the trickiest and the most challenging part of writing and reading for the PhD is to keep the reference tidy and organized. This was one of my weaknesses when I studied at TC and I remember having to go through the reference lists I had or search online. Also, I remember how complicated the task was.

Then when the IT Service offered the first training workshop on Mendeley and Paperpile reference management softwares, I needed to sign up. I have learned the foundations of the programs and their basic functions. The workshop was the two hours well spent.

Then I spent my lunch time searching for an iced Americano on campus. Of course, it means I needed to go all the way to the Edge, a cafe in Vanbrugh.

I arrived at the ReCSS office around 2 and stayed there until 5. As a Thai PhD mate, Kratib and I discussed the research and our experiences with TAP and supervision meetings, we got hungry and decided to go to Tah Tien Thai Bistro together. We then continued our discussion and share some ideas about writing and reading for research, going to conferences, meeting supervisors and many more. My main takeaway was that there are so many supervision styles when it come to supervising students. In addition, there are many types of relationship between the supervisor and the PhD student. These are the results of so many factors. Students should learn to adjust themselves to their supervisor’s style, in other words, be open and flexible. They should also seek help and be eager to ask questions or seek help. Last but no least, PhD supervisors play such a significantly important role to the PhD students’ success and happiness in the PhD journey.

I have learned so much by having a casual chat with a friend who is more experienced that I am. A lesson learned today is that I only need to open my eyes and my heart to see more and learn more.
