Towards a PhD: Learning to Say ‘No’

Day 95: 7/4/2018

It is getting better and better each day.

Some progress was made today. First of all, I got up only a few minutes late today. I strongly believe that I am gaining my own self back bit by bit slowly. Just in time to hit a five-minute snooze, I got up, got ready and went out for a run. Even though I got injured after the first and a half kilometer, it still felt great!

I came back home and tried to reestablish my morning routine. It did not go well at first but I must say it is slowly getting better. Sloooowly.

A few hours later was spent on teaching. At first I was scheduled to teach another student as well but that was cancelled again.

One thing I have to mention is a lesson I learn today, to say ‘no’. It seems easy on the surface but it is in fact very difficult to actually do it. As one of my students tried to convince me to teach them later today, tomorrow or the day after that without saying it explicitly, I was well aware of the meaning between the lines. If it was one of other previous times, I would have considered it and said yes. However, this time around having clear goals to achieve, to work on my paper, I somehow had the courage to tell that student a simple sentence that “I plan to work this afternoon and the rest of the week.” It was quite a success for me. Trust me this was not easy as it may seem.

Do not get me wrong. I value people and their time, I really do. But this time I need to learn to put my work as the top of my priority, other than people’s work like before.

The afternoon was okay. First, I spent some time unproductively watching YouTube video. Later, I realized that this can no longer continue and tried to pick myself up to do some work.

First, I proofread the supervision meeting record and checked that off my to-do list. YAY. Then, it was time to lay out and get into details of what I need to do before the deadline. So, I transfer the audio file of the fourth supervision meeting to my computer, listen to it as I took notes. This way I could make sure that all details were captures in my notes. I always find this technique helpful to refresh my memory.

It is now getting late again and I plan to get up early tomorrow. I should really finish this entry and go to bed. Until tomorrow everyone….
