Day 13, Year 2: 5/12/2019

Today was allocated as a day off.

I got up a bit late to record and broadcast a podcast. At the end, it was finished and it was one of the best episodes so far in my opinion. Then I went on to get ready for our one day trip to Knaresborough.

Knaresborough, a small town in North Yorkshire, is only 20 minutes away from York by train. Considering the name in particular, it is relative challenging and it may confuse many from the get-go; however, if you can get pass its name, you will appreciate the slow life, serene, scenic town like me.

This trip was full of surprise as claimed by the official website of Harrogate. First, our train departed about 5 minutes late from York. Based on my experience with the British rail, it has been 95 per cent on time and announcement will be made before any delay occur. Unlike common scenarios, our train both outbound and inbound were late. Well, it was our first trip with local train service and we were not at all in a rush so we just enjoyed the trip.

Secondly, we did not expect it to be as cold. It was quite cold, especially when compared to the past few weeks. Both P’Gluay and I were prepared but not quite enough I must say. It was about 5–8 degrees throughout the day and there were some peaks of sun but for the most part, it was one fine typical gloomy day in England. I am not complaining about this though. It would have been better if we wore more layers so that we could spend longer time outdoors exploring the tiny touristic town.

Last but not least, despite its small size, there are myriads to do in Knaresborough. Although I had done some research and received recommendations from my friend, we missed a lot of things including boating in the River Nidd and exploring the outdoor market. We will absolutely go back to visit this town again soon.

All in all, we spent half day, had a lovely second breakfast of the day, tried local Yorkshire chocoholic, bubble gum, and rhubarb ripple ice cream, and enjoyed walking, browsing, exploring and local people watching. It was one of the perfect spring days in the UK indeed.

After arriving in York, we went to the City Center and did some shopping for our food and essentials. It was another relaxing and yet very productive day-off for both of us.
