Towards a PhD: Getting Nervous

Day 50: 5/20/2018

As the third supervision meeting is soon approaching, I am now getting a bit nervous. It is actually a good thing when I feel this nervousness at a mild level. In fact, I need this feeling to become more productive and think-ahead kind of work mode.

Starting the day off right, I let myself indulge in bed for the first time in many weeks. I woke up at my breakfast time (9.30 am) today. I felt refreshed, energetic and ready. Since I was way too late for my usual morning run time, I decided to instead have breakfast, enjoy a bit of Sunday and study later.

I finished another chapter of the same book, Exploring Talk in School. At first the chapters seem very brief (well, when compared with other books I had read before this) but they are very rich and informative. I enjoyed reading the chapters and reflected on my own experience. I also took notes in my very messy notebook while reading. I added some ideas on questionnaire (one of the research instruments I plan to use in my study) and on literature review I soon have to start writing.

The afternoon was a quality family time with my husband. We went out to a bicycle store nearby as we needed some tools to fix our bicycle we bought yesterday. Getting some tools, going to Waitrose to get some essentials, we went back home and got ready for an afternoon run.

Done with the run and had some fun with apartment cleaning, it was then my time to sit down and focus on study.

I spent a good hour planning for the coming week. This time, I tried to be as detailed as possible and I am curious if this will help me to become more organized and efficient with time management.

My plan for the week

Again, I get a bit nervous at this point knowing that the meeting with my supervisor is in 4 days. Tomorrow, I will send her a brief progress report informing her of what I have done for the past four weeks along with my questions for her to discuss during the meeting. Hopefully, this will give her ample time to prepare for the meeting as well.

Overall self-evaluation on time and life management for this past week: 7/10
I sure need to work on productivity and time mangement.
