Towards a PhD: Contemplating Writing

Day 111: 7/20/2018

The day went by as usual. I woke up fresh at 7.30 (not really but tried so hard to freshen myself up and believe so), took reading notes of Michaels, O’Connor and Resnick (2008), and planned for the day. I love the feeling when I get up and get some work done. This made me believe I have found my prime time.

After breakfast, I took off to the office. While I was trying to concentrate on reading as I had just started a new book Better than Best Practice by Lefstein and Snell, there were many messages coming and they were calling my name due to their urgency. The first hour at the office then flew by as I responded the messages.

The rest of the hours at the office today was relatively productive. I have to say that I did a better job at controlling my temptation to pick up my phone. Plus, as the book I started reading was rather dense, especially the first chapter that was philosophical, I succeeded at forcing myself to concentrate and finished it. Yay!

There has been a weird feeling I have lately. It feels like I do not want to waste my time to do something that does not contribute to my work. It may sound selfish but it is not what it really sounds like. The thing is that at the back of my mind, I always well realize my own start date of writing is approaching. On top of that, the more I read, the more I feel like writing. Not that I think I have enough to write as of now, but more of because I am afraid I will lose keeping track of my own ideas.

Therefore, I will review my notes, draft my ideas, and start writing as I have a full day tomorrow to work by myself. Realizing that the first draft will never be the perfect or even a good draft, I thus should get my hands busy and my brain engaged and start writing anyway.

Hopefully, this will help ease my nerve and calm my soul a bit so that I can feel less guilty for not having no actual piece of work done but readings for the past three weeks.

the book I am currently reading

On a side note, I just found out that the book I am currently reading is available online for completely free of charge. Since I left the physical hard copy at the office, I can read the e-copy instead.

Also, I notice that I have become a fan of reading e-books now because the physical books borrowed from the library are not as convenient as the digital ones. First, I cannot mark, take side notes, or highlights. More importantly, unlike the downloaded e-books, they are not mine. So, again, I am falling in love with digital books slowly but deeply.

Something new I started yesterday. All explained in this video. :)
