Towards a PhD: A Semi Productive Day

Day 39: 5/9/2018

It was quite a productive day for me today.

I first started off, well not really well, by getting up at 7. I decided to listen to the audio of the second supervision meeting to make sure I do not miss something major and to prepare for the next meeting which is coming in two weeks.

Something secretly tells me that I need to work even harder for this study. As a (novice) conversation analyst, I automatically analyzed my supervisor’s talk for the entire 20+ minutes I listened to. That really shrunk my confidence I first had the moment I came out of her room that day. In the audio, I could feel there is a certain level of hesitation perhaps with my research plan. This became a powerful push for me to work harder today.

I attended the Career Planning for Research Students at Heslington Hall this morning. It was a fun and yet very informative session from which I learned so much about myself and employability skills

Strengths cards I believed reflect who I am now.

After the session, I came directly back home since I had an online session to teach. It went well and as always I felt refreshed and energized after teaching.

Here came a not-so-productive part of my day. I felt a bit under the weather possibly due to running in the rain yesterday. Then, I decided to take a 20-minute nap and that went on to a full-hour sleep. Sigh…..

All was good after all. I got up, cooked myself some dinner, watched a few YouTube videos (this was not goo at all actually), and dove into my work.

For some weird unknown reason, maybe the soon coming deadline I set for myself, I felt an urge of getting something done today! And I did! I opened an old file of my revised research proposal, added a timetable, and worked on other details to the point that I was pleased with my process.

The plan for the rest of the week is to read, read, and read. I should really finish two major books — Vygotsky and Alexander — and move on to many other books I have on the list now!

A lesson I learned today: When it comes to your very own research, don’t wait, don’t waste your time. If you can do something, literally anything, take action now. This reminds me of what Chris said in his time management session.
