Towards a PhD: A New Commitment

Day 187: 10/4/2018

Since it has been over 150 days of writing every day regardless the length of each entry, I can perhaps claim that I have successfully formed a new habit of writing.

For the past few days or the past week after the TAP meeting, to be perfectly exact, I have felt delighted, flattered but eventually became lost. All those ‘excellent’ complements from Dr. Louise will definitely get me nowhere and I need to be a better me. That is, I need a new commitment, a new habit to form and never stop challenging myself.

Today as I have been sick with allergies for the past two days, I decided not to work on anything and rest for the entire day. As usual, I listened to “Mission to the Moon” podcast which has recently my go-to everyday podcast channel. I had been curious about the author of this podcast channel and have heard about him, Khun Rawis, for a while but had never really searched for his biodata on the internet until today. He is currently a CEO of Srichand, a Thai cosmetic brand. Rawis is a business man with background in engineering and a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University, the USA. His background and education did not surprise me but his age did. I had thought that he must have been a bit older than me based upon the stories he tells in his daily podcast and writes on his FB page. To me, he is such an experienced, world-rounded and very smart. That said, Rawis is 37, in other words, he is about the same age as I am.

When I look back at myself, of course I could not help to compare him and me. There were so many aspects I could think of such as education, family, financial background, and so many more. Like he mentioned once in his podcast, never change what you are but change what you do. With that thought in mind, I scrutinized and considered carefully, what is the most different thing between me and him? Not long after that I arrived at the answer that he has read over 5,000 books whereas I have read far less than him and most of them are textbooks.

This whole thing even got me thinking that this should really be my mission, a new habit to form and a commitment to do.

From now on, I read every day.
From now on, I read a minimum of one article in my field per week.

I somehow feel fully committed and want to see how this mission will go. This is something that is challenging and I am completely convinced that if I wanted to become a better me, I need to read more.

Thank you Khun Rawis for giving me this inspiration to go beyond my usual self and to eventually, hopefully become a better me.
